Owerri West is a Local Government Areas of Nigeria, Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Umuguma. Owerri West Local government, Local Government is administered under the terms of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Elections to the office of the Chairman of the local government are held through nominations by registered political parties as stipulated by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, under the supervision of Imo State Electoral Commission. Owerri West was carved out of the former Owerri Local Government Area in 1996. A very large portion of the local government constitute the capital city of Imo State, Nigeria. Ihiagwa
Ihiagwa is a town in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. It is located south of the capital city of Owerri. The township is composed of eight villages: Umuelem, Umuchima, Mboke, Nnkaramochie, Iriamogu, Aku/Umuokwo, Ibuzo and Umuezeawula. Ihiagwa has been divided into two autonomous communities, namely Ihiagwa Ancient Kingdom (Chimelem), comprising two villages: Umuelem and Umuchima;and Dindi-Ihiagwa, comprising the remaining six villages, all divisions done for administrative and developmental reasons. Each autonomous community is a monarchy ruled by an Eze. The Ihiagwa people are members of the Igbo ethnic group in the southeastern Nigeria. The Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) is a federal government university in Owerri West, Owerri, the capital of Imo State, Nigeria. The university is bounded by the communities of Eziobodo, Ihiagwa, Obinze, Okolochi and Emeabiam. It is the premier federal university of technology in the South-East and South-South parts of Nigeria. The university is the oldest university of technology in Nigeria and was established in 1980 by executive fiat with the composition and appointment of the first provisional council by Nigeria's first Executive President, Shehu Shagari. It became the first of three such universities set up by the Federal Government of Nigeria which sought to establish a University of Technology in each geo-political region, particularly in a state which did not have a conventional university. Amakohia Ubi
Amakọhia-Ubi is an autonomous community in the Owerri West Local Government area of Imo State (1), Nigeria. The community is divided into four villages: Umunjam, Obiọkwu, Umuike, and Umuọka. Each of these villages, which later became towns, has between four and eight kindreds. Amakọhia-Ubi, originally, Amakọhia-Ubi was a village in the Umunwọha Ọfọ Ise (Children of Nwọha) community comprising Ohii, Amakohia-Ubi, Ndegwu, Orogwe, and Irete in order of seniority, until each of them was recognized as autonomous by the Peoples Democratic Party-led government. Okolochi is an ancient community in today's Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria, it borders Emeabiam, Eziobodo, Ihiagwa and Obibiezena communities. It is one of the host communities of Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO. Villages Okolochi is made up of five villages, with one culture and tradition. Eziobodo
Eziobodo is an ancient kingdom located in today's Owerri-West local government, Owerri - Imo State Nigeria. Eziobodo is an Igbo language, igbo-speaking community with a population of over 15,000 locals. Eziobodo is also known as Alueze or Alu-eze as this was the ancient name of the community before the colonial arrival of the former British Empire and Warrant Chiefs that followed much later around the 1930s. The town is made up of four villages namely; Eziobo (the descendants of the first son), Umuayo village, Umuokele village and Umuezeala. There is a fifth village battling for independence from Umuokele village called Umuechem (now independent) but they are grouped as one entity most of the time.
